Volunteer Workday: Clean Up @ Wilson Creek FCNC Preserve

Volunteers wanted to help haul heavy trash out of Wilson Creek!

Event Rating: Hard/Experienced, 18+ older

Project Background: Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina (FCNC) protected 93 acres of land along Wilson Creek, downhill from Playmore Beach Rd. The property was previously owned by Duke Energy and has historically been used as an illegal dumping site for large trash items. FCNC is partnering with A Clean Wilson Creek, Wild South, Latinos Aventureros and Catawba Riverkeeper to organize volunteer cleanups there.

What to expect: We will meet in the parking area outside of Brown Mountain Beach Resort (where a coffee shop will be open in the morning). After a stretch circle and safety talk, volunteers will carpool across the street to the cleanup site. This event is for people who don't mind a bit of a challenge! We will be collecting large/bulky trash items and using a variety of tools (pulleys, wenches, ropes, atvs, etc) to haul items up steep slopes. There will also be smaller trash items to collect.

Provided: Tools, gloves, water, and snacks. All volunteers are invited to stay after for lunch and a social hour at Brown Mountain Beach Resort!

What to bring (if you have it!):

  • Close toed shoes

  • Daypack

  • Refillable water bottle

  • Dress in layers

  • A sense of adventure!
