Foothills Conservancy Hosts Guided Hike at Sank Gap Property Near Old Fort
On Saturday, February 17, Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina will host a hike at its Sank Gap property in McDowell County, led by the conservancy’s land protection director, Tom Kenney. Now part of Foothills Conservancy’s Catawba Headwaters Preserve near Old Fort, the tract’s 259 acres include source streams of Little Crooked Creek, Sank Gap, and a portion of Edmondson Mountain.The strenuous three-hour hike will provide late winter views of surrounding mountains and Pisgah National Forest. Participants are encouraged to pack food and plenty of water, and to wear winter layers and sturdy hiking footwear. The route is mostly downhill on uneven or rough terrain.Hikers will meet near the Creston Community neighborhood in Black Mountain. Additional details about the outing will be provided to registered attendees the week of the event. The outing is expected to last about three hours and is free to FCNC supporters. There is a $10 per person fee for those who have not made a contribution to Foothills Conservancy in the past 12 months.
