Volunteer Workday: Trash Pickup

Lake James State Park is working to reclaim and preserve a historic black cemetery within the park lands. Rock Hill Cemetery is currently in disrepair and its total area is unknown. Volunteers are needed to help prep the area for a ground radar scanning that will reveal exactly how many people were buried there and where.

THE PLAN
Meet in the 3rd parking area of the park, the trail head for several mountain biking trails. From there we will carpool/caravan to the graveyard site. We will gather for introductions, history of the project, and a safety talk. Then volunteers will use hand tools to cut small diameter trees and shrubs, move large brush, and rake leaves. We will break at 12:30pm and all are welcome to stay for lunch!

HOW TO PREPARE
Please wear long pants and long sleeves. Wear closed toed shoes with ankle support if you have them. Be prepared to be standing, bending over and lifting. Wear layers for cold weather. And bring a refillable water bottle if you have one.
