Volunteer Workday: Tree Planting at Lake James

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED

Help plant trees at Lake James State Park!

Background: Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina is helping Lake James State Park re-establish native forest along NC Highway 126 going through the park. The objective is to return the site to pine-oak heath and dry oak-hickory forest types within openings and dry ridges. This has been an ongoing process that has involved prescribed burns and applying herbicides to invasive species. Now the site is ready for new trees! The trees we will be planting are: Shortleaf Pine, Table Mountain Pine, Pitch Pine, Oak spp., and Hickory spp.

What to expect: Meet at the new visitors center at Lake James State Park. Volunteers will carpool to the tree planting site. There we will have a safety talk and tree planting demonstration. Volunteers will be given a variety of tools to carry including: buckets of soil, spades, and rubber mallets. Tools, gloves, water, snacks, and training provided. All ages are welcome! Option to meet afterwards at Fonta Flora Whippoorwill Brewery for a celebratory drink!

What to bring (if you have it!):

  • Close toed shoes

  • Daypack

  • Refillable water bottle

  • Dress in layers for warmth

  • A sense of adventure!
