FCNC Surpasses 70,000 acres of permanent land protection
Foothills Conservancy of NC surpasses 70,000 acres of permanent land protection with its most recent conservation acquisition in the South Mountains. On December 29, 2023, Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina (FCNC) acquired 1,460 acres in the Pinnacle Mountains, a section of the South Mountains in McDowell and Rutherford counties. With this conservation transaction, FCNC has permanently protected 70,193 acres of land in the foothills and Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina since its founding in 1995.

Foothills Conservancy of NC announced significant progress toward the purchase and permanent protection of a 332-acre parcel of land in Blowing Rock, NC, that contains the headwaters of the Johns River and is part of an iconic view seen from The Blowing Rock attraction, U.S. 321 and other locations within the town limits of Blowing Rock.

Foothills Conservancy acquired six valuable acres for permanent conservation in Valdese. This property, across from Valdese Children’s Park on E. Main Street, will be eventually transferred to the Town of Valdese for expansion of the Children’s Park and future development of the Wilderness Gateway State Trail (WGST).
Foothills Conservancy protects 93 acres along Wilson Creek, a national Wild and Scenic River in Caldwell County
On November 4, Foothills Conservancy acquired 93 acres along one-and-a-half miles of Wilson Creek, a nationally-designated Wild and Scenic River in Caldwell County, from Duke Energy, and subsequently recorded a conservation easement held by the North Carolina Land and Water Fund to permanently protect the land and water resources.
Foothills Conservancy transfers land to NC State Parks, continues to lead on conservation efforts in Catawba County
Foothills Conservancy transferred 130 acres of conserved land along the Jacob Fork River in Catawba County to North Carolina Division of Parks & Recreation, to be permanently protected as publicly-owned land for future access and recreation in association with the Wilderness Gateway State Trail.
Foothills Conservancy permanently protects Blowing Rock property and well-known viewshed corridor on US 321
On October 6, the Finley Gwyn Harper, Sr. family heirs and C.V. Henkel, Jr. family heirs, including twelve property owners and their families – a number totaling over 50 family members – donated their property, named Cherry Tree Hollow and located in Blowing Rock above the Blue Ridge escarpment, to Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina for permanent protection.
